Thematic Appreciation Test or TAT is the first test of 4 tests of the Psychological Test series in the SSB Interview. The TAT Pictures used in the SSB are carefully chosen to present situations and scenarios that require candidates to think on their feet, tap into their creativity, and showcase their problem-solving skills. The primary objective of this test is to assess an individual’s ability to analyze complex situations, demonstrate effective decision-making, and exhibit qualities like initiative, empathy, and resilience.

TAT Procedure
The SSB TAT Pictures serve as the initial assessment within the psychological test battery. During this test, candidates are presented with a series of 12 different stories. The final, 12th story requires them to create their own narrative for a blank slide. They have a total of 4 minutes to write the story, with the first 30 seconds designated for observing and analyzing the picture. It is crucial to fully understand the expectations and requirements when preparing for the TAT test.
The key point is that the candidate’s initial reaction upon seeing the picture should be objective, positive, constructive, and purposeful. Upon viewing the picture, candidates should quickly formulate a clear theme in their mind and write a story consisting of 10 to 12 lines. It’s important to note that four minutes are allocated for writing the story for each picture. Therefore, candidates should ensure that the introduction, body, and conclusion of each story are completed within the given time.
To write the story within the allotted time, candidates should provide a concise introduction and endorse their efforts, managerial applications, approaches, and actions taken to address the situations and demonstrate social decency, if applicable, in a succinct and focused manner.
If a candidate cannot complete a story within four minutes and the next picture is displayed, it is advised to leave the incomplete story and transition to the new picture to avoid missing subsequent pictures.

Sample Picture – 1
There was a remote area known as Rahagir, that had been severely affected by prolonged periods of terrorist activities. Raj, a newly assigned police officer, recognized the need for local assistance due to the area’s rugged terrain, filled with forests and rocky landscapes that served as hiding spots for the terrorists. Raj aimed to gather information from the local residents about the terrorists and their movements to facilitate their capture. He actively rallied public support, attracting numerous volunteers who joined him in this endeavor.
The residents of the area began closely monitoring the activities of the terrorists, resulting in valuable information and insights. Raj, along with his motivated police force, effectively trapped the terrorists and successfully apprehended several of their gangs within a few months. The people of the region felt a tremendous sense of relief, and Raj’s reputation as a dedicated police officer spread within his department. Raj’s strategic approach and successful counterterrorism efforts served as an inspiration to his fellow officers and the youth of the nation. His actions and planning demonstrated the potential impact of effective leadership in combating terrorism.

There was an Air show and Air equipment expedition in Jamnagar. The Team headed by Rohit was given the responsibility to organize the event with fix schedule and proper timeline. A number of dignitaries from the government and public sector were invited from all over the country. Rohit had the responsibility to organize the reception, accommodation, transport, general administration, and departure in respect of all the invited guests. He along with his team prepared a proper roadmap by listing all the details, required for the show, briefed all about the actions by giving specific responsibility to his men, and motivated his staff for doing needful by making all the arrangements to make the event a grand success.
Rohit monitored all the activities to ensure smooth functioning. All the invitees were looked after in a good manner and expressed their happiness for good arrangements. Rohit played an important role in administrative aspects to make the show decent. Upon the conclusion of the show, he expressed his gratitude to all his team members for their commendable performance and for exemplifying the essence of teamwork.

Umesh was working as a manager of a reputed company. Every year his company arranges an all-paid trip for the star performer of their company. This year Umar was one of the best employees and has been selected for an all-paid trip to Sri Lanka with his family. Apart from this, he was also given the task of arranging this trip and making all the bookings and preparations. He selected a few of his colleagues and prepared a roadmap for the trip and did all the bookings in advance. On that day, the whole team started the trip along with their family.
They reached their location and enjoyed the next 3 days and explored all the nearby tourist destinations. In the hotel, the male team played indoor games while the female member and kids enjoyed the swimming pool. The team spent some quality time which each other and their family members also liked the arrangements and enjoyed them to the fullest. After the completion of the trip, all members thanked Umesh for these wonderful arrangements. His CEO also applauded his efforts and thanked him for making this trip a memorable team-building event.

Rahul was a government doctor working in a nearby village named Rampur. He was posted there for the last 3 years. His hospital covered 5 nearby villages. During the Monsoon season, there were growing cases of waterborne diseases. Last year almost 25% of people were affected by these diseases.
This year, Rahul decided to educate people on how to care for their health during monsoon season. He contacted the sarpanch of all the villages and presented the Idea of this campaign to them. During this campaign, he visited patients suffering from these waterborne diseases with other local people. He tried to explain to them the points and actions they should take during the rainy season or else they will also suffer like that patient. They also conducted an awareness campaign in all 5 villages. Due to his efforts, this year the cases of waterborne diseases were very less compared to previous years. The villagers and their sarpanch praised Rahul for his efforts and acknowledged him for his service.

Sanjeev was recently placed in a private company as an import-export executive. He was a quick learner and gained all the knowledge of Import and Export within a few months. He even studied the internal trade laws to get into the nitty-gritty of international trade. His efforts bore fruits and he was promoted to Assistant Manager within 4 years. He followed the global market very closely and helped to prepare strategies based on that for different markets.
Due to one of his strategies the company got a big and challenging order of delivering 100 shipments in a single month. He dedicatedly pursued this project himself and monitored the shipment by going to the ports and shipyards. Sanjeev and his team were able to complete the project within the time limit. The Management of the company was very impressed by his out-of-box thinking strategies and hard work and admired him for his efforts.
Sample Blank Story
Praveen was a good football player and had represented his school at various tournaments. After completing his school studies, he got admission to an engineering college. After seeing his good football skills, he was inducted into his college team in the first year. He was very much dedicated to playing football and never missed any training sessions. Every year there was a state-level inter-university football tournament, in which all the engineering colleges took part. Praveen’s college team had also taken part in the tournament. Their team displayed some good football and won their league matches and moved to the quarter-finals. Praveen was playing as a forward in the team and was the second top goal scorer of his team.
Their team played well in the quarter-final but lost the match as their 2 main players fell sick before the match. Praveen played really well in the entire tournament but was disheartened that their team lost the match. However, the district football committee was really impressed by his skills, and he got a call to play in the district team. Praveen and his team practiced hard for the upcoming tournaments. Next year, their hard work and perseverance paid off and they won the same inter-university football tournament and Praveen played a major role in the same. Praveen was given the Player of the Tournament award.
