Army Medical Test | Know the Full Procedure of the SSB Medical Test

The Indian defense forces require some minimum physical standards in their candidates for every type of entry. In the case of Officer Entries also, you have to clear a Medical Test after you clear your SSB Interview. This Medical Examination will be conducted in the nearest Military Hospital. This Medical Inspection has a series of Tests, which takes further 4-5 days after your SSB Interview gets over. All the recommended candidates change their chest numbers and the rest of the candidates are dispersed. In this article, we will discuss the tests conducted during the Medical Examination after the SSB Interview. We will also know if we get a Temporary rejection in the Initial Medical Examination of the Army Medical Test.

So, first, we will start with the Type of Tests conducted in the Army Medical Test.

Special Medical Board or SMB of Army Medical Test

The candidates who have been shortlisted by the SSB Board have to undergo a special medical test. These medical tests conducted are called Special Medical Tests which will be done at the nearest Military Hospital. These tests would take 4-5 days time after your SSB Tests. The Medical Standards will be as per the Specified Wing for which you attend the SSB. If you are attending the SSB Interview for NDA, then you will be evaluated as per your Selected Preference in the Sequence of Airforce, Navy, and Army.

General Medical Examination

The general health points like your Height, weight, blood pressure, heartbeat, Chest Enlargement, etc. are checked in General Medical Examination. This test is clubbed with Blood Tests and Urine tests.

Blood Tests & Urine Tests

Blood Tests and Urine Tests are the basic tests to know your Inner Body. It shows your blood configuration, the water quality, and other essential minerals of your body.

Chest X-ray

The Chest X-ray is done to examine your Chest and Rib Cage. It looks for any abnormality in the chest area, as you must have a fully-grown chest.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is like an X-ray of your Kidney and Liver. Before Ultrasound you will be asked to drink a lot of water. This test is to check the health of your Liver and Kidney. To get better results you must limit the intake of sodium and consume high-quality protein.

ENT Tests (Ear, Nose & Tongue)

ENT conducts a series of Tests to check the medical standards of your Ear, Nose, and Tongue. It is advised to get your wax cleared from your ear. Before this test, you should also check your DNS or Deviated Nasal Septum and Tonsillitis. A hearing test will be conducted to check your hearing ability.

Eye Check-up

In your Eye Check-up, your eyes are tested for all aspects. You must be free from Defective Colour Vision, LASIK Surgery, or any other type of abnormality in your eyes. They also check the eyes internally through various tests. Other visual standards as per Army stands are

  • Your vision – Uncorrected without glass: 6/6, 6/9
  • Your vision – Corrected with glass: 6/6 (This is allowable for Hypermetropia only.
  • Any amount of myopia is not acceptable.
  • Allowable Limits for Hypermetropia: +2.00 D

Surgical Examination

In this test, your overall body will be checked for any surgical deformity or any abnormality. This test will be done personally by removing all your clothes. The major points that are checked are Hydrocele / Phimosis, Piles, Gynecomastia, and Veri-Cocele. Any past surgeries that can affect your job role will be checked.

Dental Examination

This Dental check-up seeks to check the overall health of your teeth. They check for any jumbled or crooked teeth or any other sign of an unhealthy mouth. There should be a minimum of 14 Dental Points with healthy teeth. The dental points are also checked to ascertain your exact age, as the number of teeth grows with your age.

Medical Conference

When all your test is done, a report will be generated which will have the summary of all your tests. If you are fit and clear all the medical examinations, then you can enjoy and wait for the merit list. However, if you have any abnormality or deviation from the required standards, then based on its severity you will be given a Temporary rejection or Permanent rejection.

If declared Unfit after SSB Medical Examination

If you are declared unfit by the special medical board or SMB – then you have the option to appeal and challenge this decision for medical examination. Majority of cases for which the candidates get TR or Temporary Rejection like – overweight/underweight, wax in ears, or any such minor defects which can be treated within a short span of time. In such cases, you will be given 42 days’ time to overcome such abnormalities.

After 42 days, the candidate can take a re-examination of the Medical test at the Appeal Medical Board.

What is Appeal Medical Board (AMB) at Army Medical Examination?

If you are declared unfit by the Special Medical Board – either by getting a Temporary Rejection or Permanent Rejection – you can appeal this result at Appeal Medical Board. The candidates who get Permanent rejection have to apply by depositing fees of Rs. 40 while there are no fees charged to candidates who get Temporary Rejection.
You can visit any of the below hospitals, where there will be your Appeal Medical Board.

  1. Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt.
  2. Command Hospital, Southern Command, Pune.
  3. Command Hospital, Central Command, Lucknow.
  4. Command Hospital, Eastern Command, Kolkata.
  5. Command Hospital, Air Force, Bangalore.
  6. Command Hospital, Northern Command, C/o 56 APO.
  7. Command Hospital, Western Command, Chandimandir.
  8. INHS, Ashvini, Mumbai

The candidates have to report to anyone of these hospitals within the specified time of 42 days from the last date examined at the special medical board with a copy of a letter received at SMB or Special Medical Board. Your stay at AMB will be depended upon the number of Medical tests that have to be conducted.

What if you are declared Medical Unfit by Appeal Medical Board? – Review Medical Board (RMB)

After AMB, you can reapply for re-examination at Review Medical Board. However, you can challenge the result based on the merit of the result by AMB. To apply further for the review medical board, you have to submit a review request by writing a letter within one day of the result of the Appeal Medical Board to The Recruitment Directorate (Personnel & Coord) of the Army Headquarters, New Delhi.

The Review Medical Board will be conducted either at R&R Hospital, Delhi Cantt, and AFMC, Pune.

Expenses of Stay during Medical Examination

  • Special Medical Board (SMB) – You have to stay back after your SSB Interview at the same SSB Centre for your SMB. All the expenses will be borne by the SSB Board.
  • Appeal Medical Board (AMB) – for your stay at AMB, the candidates have to arrange for their loading and boarding and no reimbursement will be done for your arrangements.
  • Review Medical Board (RMB) – At RMB also, the candidates have to make their own arrangements for loading and boarding.
