14th January – The Armed Forces Veterans’ Day

On 14th January 2023, India celebrated its 7th Armed Forces Veterans’ Day across the country.

The day is celebrated as Armed forces Veterans’ Day as on 14th January 1953, Indian Army Field Marshal KM Cariappa formally retired from the Army. He was the first Indian to become the first chief of the Indian Army. Veterans’ Day has been celebrated since 2017 to ensure the solidarity between the retired and the serving soldiers and to remember the supreme sacrifices they have made for the nation.

15th January – The Army Day

This year on 15 January, India celebrated its 75th Army Day.


Every year, 15th January is observed as “Army Day” on 15th January 1949 – the then General (Later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa became the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army and took charge from the last British Commander General Sir. Francis Butcher.

The Day is remembered to salute and honor the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country and its citizens.

1st February – The Coast Guard Day

On 1st February 2023, India celebrated its 47th Coast Guard Day.

Coast Guard Day is celebrated every year on 1st February to honor the formation of the Indian Coast Guard on this day in the year of 1977.

The Indian Coast Guard organizes many activities and events to create awareness among the common people about their roles and responsibilities. On this occasion, they pay tribute to the brave women and men of the Indian Coast Guard who have made noteworthy contributions to the country’s maritime security.

4th March – “Rashtriya Suraksha Diwas” or The National Security Day

On 4th March 2023, India celebrated its 51st National Security Day or Rashtriya Diwas.

The day is celebrated to honor and show gratitude to all our Security Forces. This includes the police force, para-military forces, guards, commandos, army officers, airforce officers, naval officers, and other forces who are involved in maintaining the peace and security of the people of our country.

26th July – Kargil Vijay Diwas

India celebrated the 23rd Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26th July 2022.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas is memorialized in India to honor the sacrifices made by our soldiers during the Indo-Pak war of 1999 – which is also known as the Kargil War. Special operation – ‘Operation Vijay’ was fought by the Indian Army in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir to send back the infiltrators on Indian territory.

8th October – The Airforce Day

On 8th October 2022, India celebrated its 90th Indian Airforce day.

This year Indian Airforce completed 90 years of its formation. On this day, Indian Airforce pays tribute to all the airforce warriors who are securing the airspace of India and conducting rescue operations when needed. The Indian Airforce was formed in 1932 during world war II to support the UK Airforce.

4th Sunday of Every November – The NCC Day

On 27th November 2022, NCC celebrated its 74th formation day.

NCC or National Cadets Corps is the largest uniformed youth association in the world which was formed on 15th July 1948. However, NCC day was observed on the fourth Sunday of November, as the first unit of NCC was formed on that day. NCC Day was celebrated to remember the goals and objectives behind the formation of this youth organization.

4th December – The Navy Day

On 4th November, Indian Navy celebrated its 78th Navy day.

Before Independence, The Royal Indian Navy first observed Navy day on 21st October 1944. The Idea behind celebrating Navy day was to boost the outreach and increase awareness about the Navy among common people. Later, it was decided that Navy Day would be celebrated on 4th December in honor to remember the actions of the Indian Navy during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The Navy also observes Navy week every year from 1 to 7 December.

7th December – The Armed Forces Flag Day

On 7th December 2022, The Defence Ministry celebrated its 73rd Armed Forces Flag Day.

The Armed Forces Flag Day is celebrated to enable more public participation in Armed Forces and collect funds for the betterment of Armed forces staff.

A committee of the Defense Ministry created the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund on August 28, 1949. Later in 1993, the Ministry merged all relevant welfare funds, including funds for war victims, the ex-welfare servicemen’s fund, the Kendriya Sainik Board Fund, and other such funds to establish the Armed Forces Flag Day fund.

16th December – Vijay Diwas

On 16th December 2022, it marked the 51st anniversary of Vijay Diwas.

This year completes the 51st year of India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. This war saw the formation of Bangladesh which was formerly called East Pakistan. The Indian Army on December 16, 1971, emerged victorious after the Pakistani soldiers were brought down to their knees.

The Commander of India’s Eastern Army – Lt. General Jagjit Singh Arora brokered the surrender of the Pakistani Troops which Lt. General AAK Niazi, the Pakistani Commander, led. Since then, the day has been remembered as “Vijay Diwas” to remember the courage and sacrifices of our soldiers of the Indian Army.

1st May – Armour Day

On 1st May 2022, The Indian Army celebrated its 84th Armour Day

Armour Day is celebrated every year on May 1 as on this day in 1938, the Scindia Horse became the first regiment to be converted to tanks. The Armoured Corps currently consists of 67 armoured regiments which include the president’s bodyguards.

28th September – Gunner’s Day or Artillery Day

On 28th September 2022, The Indian Army celebrated its 196th Gunners’ Day.

The day is celebrated as Gunners Day to mark the formation of the first Artillery unit – the Five (Bombay) Mountain Battery on September 28, 1827. This battery of the Artillery Regiment has been in uninterrupted service since its formation.

9th October – Territorial Army Day

On 9th October, the Territorial Army celebrated its 73rd raising day across the country.

Every year on 9th October, Territorial Army day is celebrated to commemorate its formation by Shri C Rajagopalachari, the first Governor General of India on this day in 1949.

The Territorial Army consists of a number of Infantry and Engineer units that are affiliated with various regular regiments of the Indian Army. There are some ‘Home and Hearth’ battalions also of the Territorial Army which are based on the concept of ‘Sons of Soil’. There are 10 Ecological Battalions of the Territorial Army that are working for the restoration of the environment in the country.

27th October – National Infantry Day

On 27th October 2022, The Indian Army celebrated the 75th National Infantry Day

Every year on October 27, the Indian Army celebrates Infantry Day to respect, honor, and pay tribute to the brave Indian infantry soldiers who fought the Pakistan Army when they invaded Kashmir at the time of Independence in 1947. The Indian Airforce carried soldiers of 1 Sikh battalion into Srinagar on this day in 1947.
