The Group Planning Exercise (GPE) or also called The Military Planning Exercise is a part of the GTO test series. Through this exercise, the GTO evaluates the ability of planning and leadership of the candidate. This test covers a variety of issues in various contexts. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the candidates’ mental attentiveness, comprehension ability, and power of understanding as well as their resourcefulness, thoughtfulness, and ability to organize the available workforce.

It also examines their ability to plan how they will handle various situations and determine the best course of action. The GTO decides whether they have the necessary skills and group-working skills after seeing the entire military planning exercise.

The procedure of Group Planning Exercise (GPE)

Each candidate receives a copy of the printed narrative from the GTO. Then he goes on to illustrate the many scenarios and specifics that are present. The problem and the circumstance are described using a sand model, and GTO makes sure that each applicant has a thorough understanding of both. Therefore, it is essential that the candidates thoroughly read the narrative. The GTO requests clarification from the contestants once more.

The GTO instructs the applicants to write their solution on a piece of paper once they have completely understood the narrative and problem. The candidates are asked to have a discussion on the problem and the circumstance to find the best possible solution after the written work is finished. All of the candidates must agree on a solution, that must be finalized by the candidates collectively. One of the candidates is given the task of reading the final plan once it has been approved by the group.

Example-1

There was a famous picnic spot in the town near forest ZINA. You along with your group had gathered at the picnic spot to enjoy your Sunday. When you were at the picnic area, you got the information from somewhere that some dacoits were planning to rob the train that passes over the temple at 10 AM. They were said to be hiding close to the temple. At the same time, you were informed that two guys in the village of RAMNAGAR have fallen from a roof and are critically hurt.

As you raced to the scene after hearing a loud cry, you saw that one of your friends had broken his wrist bone after falling from a tree while aiming to shoot a spotted deer. One minute later, someone came racing to tell you that a venomous snake had bitten a villager from RAMNAGAR. It is currently 10:15 AM. On the roads, there is a reliable transportation system.
How do you plan to handle the circumstance?

Problems

  • The thieves must be stopped from robbing the train.
  • To save the lives of two people who fell from a roof, suffered terrible injuries, and are unconscious, and to arrange for their treatment.
  • To save the life of a victim of a venomous snake bite.
  • To arrange for our friend’s wrist bone fracture therapy after he fell from a tree.

Probable Solution

  • As soon as a phone is accessible, the official in charge of Police Station Indra Nagar will be alerted of the location and plan of the thieves.
  • Four of us will use the fastest vehicle on the road to approach the thieves quietly and tactfully to surprise and force them to surrender. They will be given to the police, who will probably come with us.
  • Two of our team members will go to RAMNAGAR village. The person who was critically injured will be attended to first and will be given the required first aid. Then the man who was bitten by the venomous snake and this person will be taken to the Indranagar hospital as soon as possible.

EXAMPLE – 2

There are eight of you, and each of you has access to weapons. You are responsible for guarding the golden idol. You learned that foreign smugglers are likely to steal the idol from the temple and that they intend to flee from the airport on the last flight, which will depart at 5:55 PM. After a minute, you received word that four criminals were preparing to steal government Treasure. There is only one guard present, but he is armed and prepared with ammunition.

Two terrorists, who are currently hiding in the village of VISHAL, have reportedly been preparing to sabotage operations between the SHYAM railway station and VISHAL village. Between the temple and the railway station, there is a big lake, then there is an airport. A metalled road surrounds the entire island of Iake, and frequent transportation is available there. A boat and ferry are available for your use. The event starts at 4 PM and ends at 6 PM. How will you handle the situation?

Problems

  • Guarding the golden idol.
  • To detain the smugglers and prevent them from flying away.
  • To detain terrorists in the village of VISHAL and thwart their plan.
  • must phone the police and train authorities and inform them of the terrorist’s plot.
  • Watch over government property and phone the police.

Probable Solution

  • A railway station is the closest to your current location. In order for our team and the police to operate a wide-ranging strategy to catch the smugglers as well as the terrorists, one individual will run to the railway station to call Police Station Aabash Society and report the smuggling of idols and the concealment of terrorists in the village of VISHAL.
  • The same man will alert the SHYAM railway station’s authority about the sabotage so that the railway police can act swiftly and preventively.

You also got to know that a house in the village of RAM Nagar has caught fire and is rapidly spreading.

After waiting for five minutes, someone informs you about a two-truck collision near the 26-mile marker in which two males died on the spot and three women suffered severe injuries and are in critical condition. When you get to the scene of the collision, you see that two motorcycle-riding offenders get off their bikes, grab the lady’s chain, and flee on their motorcycles. You discover two punctures in your Jeep’s tires. Between RAMPUR and JAGIRGADH, regular bus and three- and four-wheeler services are available. How will you handle the circumstance?

Problems

  • The blasting of a railroad bridge;
  • The collision of two trucks, in which three women suffered serious injuries and are unconscious.
