The Conference at the SSB Interview – Procedure and Important Tips

The culminating event of the SSB Interview – The Conference happens on the 5th and final day of the SSB Interview. During the earlier stages of the SSB Interview – you will be assessed based on the three aspects – how fit you are psychologically for the defense, your ability to handle daily military operations, and how mentally strong you are for this role. On the final day of the SSB, all the assessors meet in a Conference room and discuss the performance of every candidate. So, this event is called the Conference. In this article, we will discuss the Conference at the SSB Interview and how it is conducted. So, let’s start by understanding the procedure of the Conference at the SSB Interview.

The Procedure of the SSB Conference

All the candidates will be gathered at the assembly point where they will be briefed about the proceeding of the conference procedure. It will start in either ascending order or descending order of the chest numbers. The first candidate will go inside the conference room and the next candidate will sit in the waiting area where their chest number will be displayed along with a bell. Once the bell rings, the next candidate goes inside the conference room and the next candidate comes to the waiting area.

Once you enter the room, you will see all the assessors of the board – starting from the GTOs, the psychologists, the Interviewing officer, and other members. They will sit on U shaped table and a chair will be placed in the center facing them. You have to greet them and ask for their permission to sit if they don’t ask you to sit. They will ask you some questions and take your feedback about your SSB Interview experience.

Usually, the conference lasts for around 2 to 5 minutes, where the board will ask these questions. However, If the selecting panel is indecisive, then they might ask you some questions, similar to those that were asked in your personal Interview. You might also face any situation reaction questions. They will cross-question you unless they are satisfied with your performance – either to select you or to give you one more chance.

What happens in the SSB Conference?

The conference is like your report card – where all your assessors and other board members sit and discuss your performance. The performance of every candidate is discussed in all three aspects – the Psychological test, the GTO tests, and the personal Interview.

The decision is taken by keeping the performance of all three tests. If the panel is indecisive about any candidate’s result, they will assess you once again simultaneously by asking some questions at the conference. So, be prepared for every task, and every test in the SSB interview. If you were not able to answer any questions in the personal interview, be ready with that answer.

8. Did you enjoy the food of the mess? Any suggestions?
9. Do you have any suggestions for improvement for the SSB center?
10. Some SRTs or other questions if you are boarder line case.

Important Tips for the SSB Conference

1. You should dress nicely as per the dress code mentioned in your call letter. Your chest number should be neat and can be seen clearly.
2. While you are sitting on the chair, you should maintain your posture and avoid any unwanted acts like shaking your legs/ extra movements of your hands or shivering. Enter the room gently and sit straight on the chair.
3. As soon as you come close to your chair, you should wish to the person sitting in front of you. After that, either your interviewing officer or any other senior officer will start interacting with you.
4. Even while you exit the room, stand up smoothly without much disturbance after getting the instructions. You should greet all the members present over there and close the door smoothly.
5. Before entering the room, you should control your nervousness and be confident. Just think that you have done your best and the result will be the best. Thinking this in your mind, control your emotions, and calm your mind. Just think that this is just another important interaction with your IO with whom you have interacted earlier.
6. Always have a smiling face during the entire conference.
7. Be attentive to the questions asked and be alert as soon as you enter the room. Be prepared for any question and answer them confidently. When asked any question, be loud and clear while answering and answer directly to the correct person. While answering has eye contact with them.
8. Never get confused while answering any question.
9. Avoid giving any type of suggestions or asking any questions during the conference. Also, never criticize the SSB selection criteria or suggest any improvements in them. The selection pattern and criteria are framed after much research.
10. During your Personal Interview, the IO asks some questions which you might not know at that point in time. So, remember these questions and prepare them as the IO may ask them again during the Conference.
11. Before the conference, the JCO will brief you on how to behave and give some instructions. Always follow those instructions.
