It offers the candidate’s an opportunity to make their first good impression on the GTO. What is the GTO Observing in SSB Interview?
- Your information level on current affairs and overall knowledge of General Studies are measured through the content and quality of your views.
- Your ability to support your views with facts and figures along with logical and meaningful arguments.
How organized is your thought process?
- Your ability to precise your views with complete clarity and ease. The same will only happen if you’ve got the skills given within the below three points.
- Your social attributes are seen through the way you engage others within the discussion.
- How tactful are you in handling difficult and group disruptive characters within the group?
- How balanced and matured are your views about the overall socio-economic and geo-political environment of our society?
- Your self-confidence and energy level are observed.
- What quite an impact (negative or positive) are you creating on the others within the group is observed.
- Your ability to face up to, and gracefully recover, from the setbacks received through counter-arguments given by others.
- Your mental stamina to stay continuously visible during a positive manner within the GD is seen.
Tips for Effective Participation for Group Discussion at SSB Interview
- Be an early entrant into the GD. Speaking first isn’t necessary, however, speak early in order that somebody else doesn’t divulge the purpose you wanted to mention.
- Do not speak continuously, as you may appear to be overbearing, so, speak more often, for a lesser duration each time.
- Give concise points relevant to the lead that you simply are supporting. Do not take off at a tangent.
- Do not wander too much from the main topic that you decided to support and support it till the end of the discussion. However, you could link your arguments with the point of view being supported by another candidate by giving relevant facts and figures.
- Remember, it is not a debate, so your mission should not be to prove the other candidate wrong, but to support your own points and arguments with good logical arguments.
- The greater your knowledge of that domain, the higher you’ll be ready to speak. Try and quote some facts and figures and also give some examples from history/ recent times to support your augment.
- Be sensitive and extra cautious to the point of view and participation of others, also encourage them as they give their views, and look very interested in their viewpoint, even if it is ordinary.
- Do not be rude, radical, or anti-establishment by blaming the systems, authority figures, and therefore the Govt.
- Always remain composed, and cheerful, and show a high, positive energy state. Maintain a smiling and pleasant disposition.
- Do not get unnecessarily angry with someone who is trying to be argumentative. Remain friendly with everyone, but firm and logical while giving your point of view.
- In case a candidate is continuously interrupting while you want to speak, you could politely, with a smile on your face, ask him for his Chest Number and tell him in a pleasing way to complete or ask him to give everyone a chance.
- Before making a point always draw other people’s attention, by saying sentences like ‘I wish to add to the point of Chest Number X’ or ‘I beg to differ with the point raised by Chest No Y’,.
Finally, if you are well informed about the topic and have the ability to link current events to the given topic, logical, well-groomed, and a friendly person you will always do well in the GD. However, to know where you stand and assess your true potential you will have to physically participate in multiple GDs before leaving for your SSB.
Time to Practice Group Discussion for SSB Interview
Let’s see a sample GD topic and all relevant points that must be covered in it, I am trying to putting it down for your reference and practice.
These points are my personal recommendation. You may add or subtract some points depending upon your strength of some topic.
Group Discussion Topic
- What happens to be the most important challenge that the government of India must address on priority within the present times and what in your opinion should be the way ahead:
- Economic Growth and Infrastructure Development.
- Communal Harmony and Countering External Aggression
- Corruption and Human Rights Violations
Make sure that you simply give valid meaningful views and support your arguments with logic and good examples.
The line of thought that you may like to choose amongst the above, you can expand it to give points as given below against each.
Please note that recent developments – like new laws or reports of any government committee on any major issue or any judgment passed by major courts must be quoted with facts and figures which are related to the given topic or your point of view – in order to support your arguments.
Economy – points you may speak for
- Incentivizing foreign investments,
- Infrastructural development – recent investments or government Initiation,
- Curbing inflation – recent RBI Figures, NITI Ayog Targets, and measures
- Checking the devaluation of the rupee,
- Making the economy export-driven rather than import is driven by mobilizing the manufacturing sector,
- Foreign collaborations,
- Improving connectivity within and to other friendly nations,
- Skills development,
- Targeted Public Distribution System,
- Improving the investment climate,
- Improved taxation, etc.
Communal Harmony and Countering External Aggression
- Curbing divisive forces
- Naxalism – Government Policies and measures
- Hate-mongering
- Regionalism and divisions within the name of caste, creed, religion
- Setting up NCTC (National Counter Terrorism Centre) for better intelligence sharing,
- Better training & equipping of state forces
- Checking refugee problem
- Making North Eastern states feel part of the country, etc
- Have a clear and well-defined foreign policy and give an apt military reply without escalating the issue to a full-scale war
- Win the hearts and minds of locals of J&K
- Shape the world’s opinion
- Have closer ties with USA and SE Asian countries to act as a counterweight against China, etc
Corruption and Human Rights
- Checking black marketing and outflow of black money
- Checking scams through greater transparency and accountability
- Breaking the politician-criminal-bureaucrat nexus – be very cautious about what you speak
- A methodology for proper and prompt implementation of anti-corruption legislation
- Exemplary punishment to defaulters
- Proper implementation of land reforms
- Judicial reforms
- Police reforms and all other systemic reforms
- Safeguarding rights of women and children, etc.
